Shields won the gold medal at the 2016 AMBC Olympic Qualifying event in Argentina. She then went on to win the gold medal in the women’s middleweight division at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio. At the competition, she was awarded the Val Barker Trophy for the first time in the women’s division. Her back-to-back Olympic gold medal wins made her the first American boxer to win consecutive Olympic gold medals.

Shields defeated 17-0 Tori Nelson in January 2018, to retain her WBC and IBF female super middleweight belts and win the WBAN super-middleweight title. She had never gone all ten rounds in her professional career.

She became the first world champion boxer in the four-belt era to hold uncontested championships in two weight classes with the victory.

Shields signed a three-year contract with the Professional Fighters League in November 2020 and was set to make her mixed martial arts debut in 2021. Shields made her MMA debut against Brittney Elkin at PFL 4 on June 2021. In the third round, she won via technical knockout.
