This is why Dillian Whyte won't fight Charles Martin next

WBC interim heavyweight champion Dillian Whyte (28-2) has picked second-tier heavyweight fighter Jermaine Franklin as his next opponent instead of Charles Martin (28-2-1).

The 33-year-old interim champion believes that there is no benefit in fighting 35-year-old Martin. Whyte feels that the Prince has been eyeing a match against him only for money.

“It sounds like Charles Martin is up to his old tricks and is desperate for a payday to keep him going. Nothing he says worries me in the slightest. Ravings of a deluded fool,” Whyte stated in a recent interview. “He’s not a guy where you sit there and think, ‘wow, Charles Martin wants to fight me.’ He’s a useless bum, really.”

The 33-year-old has been quick to outline what is next on his list.

He said: “Jermaine Franklin is in the running. There are a few other guys in the running as well. Now I’m in a good position, and now I’ve got my [interim WBC heavyweight] title.”

The champ said that he has been chasing the big fights “for a long time” and now he plans to pull off “the biggest and the best fights” regardless of the venue.

He added that he has been eyeing fights against juggernauts of the division, but no one is willing to lock horns against him.

“I’m willing to fight anyone, but it’s been hard getting the challenges I want. I’ve been trying to fight Wilder for 600 years. I’ve been trying to fight Tyson Fury, I’ve been trying to fight Joshua, I’ve been trying to fight Andy Ruiz, I’ve been trying to fight Luis Ortiz.”

He added: “I’ve been trying to fight all of these guys but none of them wants to fight, so I have to take the next available dangerous contenders down the list. If it’s America, then let’s go!”

Martin has been asking Whyte to settle the bad blood between them inside the ring for a longtime.

He even took a jibe at the interim champ in a recent interview, saying that the boxer is hiding behind his promoter and Matchroom Sports CEO, Eddie Hearn.

In conversation with Sky Sports, the former IBF world champion said: “You talking all that slick mess. You ain’t the prize, Fury is the prize. Joshua is the prize. You going to come over here, all the way to America to fight a bum, and not me.”

“Why don’t you let me welcome you hereby knocking you out? You know what I’m saying. I’m rated all across the board brother, so who else are you going to fight?”

“Stop hiding behind Eddie Hearn,” the 35-year-old continued.

Martin was of the view that Whyte is not taking up the fight because he fears a loss.

“If you really want to convince people that I’m easy, then why don’t you come over here and take this easy money from me then? Because you know you can’t do that,” the former champ asserted.

Martin last graced the octagon in February 2020 when he knocked out Gerald Washington.
