Lino Ventura was a prizefighter and professional wrestler before beginning his acting career. He had to retire from wrestling due to an injury. In 1953, one of his friends introduced him to Jacques Becker, who was looking for an Italian actor to co-star with Jean Gabin in the gangster film ‘Touchez pas au grisbi(1954).
Becker immediately offered him the role of Angelo, which Ventura initially refused but later accepted. His presence in the film was so strong that the entire industry took notice. The film was a huge success.
He began his career in hard-boiled gangster films, frequently co-starring with his friend Jean Gabin, including his second film, ‘Razzia sur la chnouf’ (1955).
Gabin’s Law of the Streets (1956) and Crime and Punishment (1957) followed (1956). Some of his most well-known roles include corrupt police chief Tiger Brown in “The Threepenny Opera” (1963) and mob boss Vito Genovese in “The Valachi Papers” (1972).
Despite remaining an Italian citizen his entire life and becoming accustomed to seeing himself dubbed into Italian from the original French release, he only made a handful of films in his native language, including ‘The Last Judgement’ (Il giudizio universale, 1961), ‘Illustrious Corpses’ (Cadaveri eccellenti, 1976), and ‘Cento Giorni a Palermo’ (Cento Giorn (1983).
