Early Life and Family

Sharad Pawar was born on 12 December 1940. He is one of 11 children of Govind Rao Pawar (and his wife Shardabai Pawar) whose ancestors were from Satara.

Govinda’s family had moved to Baramati in the past to be near Govinda. Shahu boarding was also managed by Govind.

Sharad Pawar attended Brian Maharashtra College of Commerce in Pune for higher studies.

Most of his siblings were educated and had achieved success in their respective fields.

He, the former CM, began his political career at a young age. While he was still in college, he joined Youth Congress. He was elected the Poona district’s new president in 1962.

Sharad Pawar’s first political act was as a schoolboy when he organized a protest march in Pravaranagar for Goan independence in 1956. He was an active student politician at AIT College.

Young Pawar was a fan of the Congress Party and joined Youth Congress in 1958 to become the President, of the Pune district Youth Congress.

He served as one of two secretaries for the Maharashtra Youth Congress. He also kept in touch with bigWigs.

In 1967, at the young age of 27, was nominated to be the candidate for the Baramati constituency in the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly.

This nomination overtook more experienced members of the Undivided Congress Party.
