About Young Dolph
On July 27, 1985, Young Dolph was born in Chicago, Illinois. His parents were addicted to crack cocaine. So, he and his four siblings grew up under the care of his grandmother in Memphis, Tennessee. After completing high school at Hamilton High School, he decided to focus on his musical career. He and late mainstream rapper Juice WRLD were cousins.
In 2008, Dolph released his debut mixtape, “Paper Route Campaign.” After formally establishing his label in 2010, he released another mixtape, “Welcome 2 Dolph World,” the same year. With his unique “vociferous” rap style, he soon became popular.
After releasing a few more mixtapes, Dolph released his debut album titled “King of Memphis” in 2016. The album peaked at #49 on the Billboard 200. It also caused a rift between him and other Memphis rappers like Yo Gotti and Blac Youngsta, which resulted in multiple shootings.
In 2018, his single “Major,” featuring his cousin, Key Glock, peaked at #47 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart. He released his first collab album with Key Glock titled, “Dum and Dummer” the following year. It peaked at #8 on Billboard 200. The same year robbers ran off with $430k worth of jewelry, cash, and electronics from his car.
The rapper had a successful career since most of his albums peaked within the top 10 of the US Billboard 200. He dropped his last album, “Dum and Dummer 2,” on March 26, 2021. The album was a sequel to 2019’s “Dum and Dummer,” and his cousin Key Glock was again a part of it. It was critically acclaimed by reviewers and fans for its pop culture references and cartoony aesthetics. In 2020, Dolph considered retiring from music to make more time for his children.
