Cricket fans are ecstatic to see India and Pakistan in Group 2 of the ICC T20 Cricket World Cup that will be hosted by the BCCI in the UAE. The tournament will begin in October.
Pakistan are yet to defeat India in any World Cup. While the Men in Green enjoy a comprehensive lead over their arch-rivals in overall wins, they have succumbed to pressure in the world cups.
Both India and Pakistan have won World T20 once. India won the inaugural T20 World Cup in 2007 when they defeated Pakistan in the final. Remember that Misbah ul Haq scoop on the final ball Pakistan fans?
But Pakistan were quick to make amends. In 2009, Youus Khan-led Pakistan lifted the T20 trophy in England by defeating Sri Lanka in the final at Lord’s Cricket Stadium.
Both countries have failed to touch silverware since then. West Indies are the current champions and they’ve won the T20 World Cup twice.
In the UAE, Pakistan have the experience on their side, but India is equally great on the flat tracks of Dubai and they showed that in the Asia Cup where they outfoxed Men in Green.
ICC Acting Chief Executive Geoff Allardice had a few words to say after the top-cricket body announced the groups for the mega-event.
“We are delighted to announce the groups for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2021. There are some great matchups offered by the groups and it starts to bring the event to life for our fans as our first multi-team event since the onset of the global pandemic draws closer,” Allardice said.
“Given the disruption caused by COVID-19, we selected the cutoff date as close as possible to the event to ensure we were able to include the maximum amount of cricket in the rankings which determine the groups. There is no doubt we will witness some highly competitive cricket when the event gets underway in just three months.”
This year’s tournament was planned to be held in India, but the BCCI decided to change the venue after taking the coronavirus situation into account.
This is what BCCI President Sourav Ganguly had to say on the hosting rights going to Oman and Dubai.
“It is good to get Oman in the frame of world cricket with the hosting of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. It will help a lot of young players take an interest in the game. We know it will be a world-class event in this part of the world.”
Oman Cricket Chairman Pankaj Khimji is also glad to host one of the biggest competitions in cricket. “Oman Cricket has come a long way and today is a watershed moment for us to have ICC and BCCI here at Oman Cricket Academy to announce the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup groups!” he said.
