Leatherface, the infamous cannibal from The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, joined Dead by Daylight on Sept. 14, 2017. In this half-chapter DLC centered on the iconic horror franchise, The Cannibal became one of the (now) twenty-nine killers present within the game. But, could Bubba Sawyer be departing from Dead by Daylight, given the imminent release of the game based on The Texas Chainsaw Massacre?

Leaving-face?

It’s quite possible. In fact, there’s definitely precedent for it.

In August of 2021, it was announced that the collaboration between Dead by Daylight and Stranger Things was coming to an unceremonious end. It’d seem as if this happened because Netflix wanted to limit their third-party deals, what with their recent shift to making and hosting games.

If the infamous killer was, in fact, leaving, it wouldn’t even be the first time he’s been in hot water. Earlier this year, cosmetics related to The Texas Chainsaw Massacre were removed from Dead by Daylight due to racist harassment. Granted, in this specific instance it wasn’t related to the rightsholders, but if Behaviour Interactive is given a choice to keep Leatherface or toss him, they could decide he’s not worth the trouble.

It really comes down to the rightsholders, though. If the people who own The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and who licensed it out to Gun Interactive for the upcoming release want to pull it from Dead by Daylight, they will. This isn’t a problem exclusive to Leatherface. Evil Dead: the Game released back in May, and if the rightsholders for that franchise wanted to pull him, they’d also be well within their rights.
