About Alphonso Davies
Alphonso Davies was born in a refugee camp in Buduburam, Ghana, to Liberian parents that were displaced during the Second Liberian Civil War, as the fourth of six children. They emigrated to Canada in 2005 and eventually settled down in Edmonton. There, Davies played football with Free Footie, a league for elementary school students that can’t afford the equipment, registration fees, and transportation to games. Then, he became a part of a soccer accelerator program at University Hill Secondary School and started playing for Edmonton Internationals and Edmonton Strikers.
At the age of 14, he joined the Whitecaps FC Academy. By signing with Whitecaps FC 2 in 2016, Davies became the youngest player to get a contract in the USL. He debuted with the team in April 2016 and scored his first goal on 15 May 2016, which made him the youngest scorer in the history of USL. He held this record until 2020.
In June of 2016, he debuted with the first team against Ottawa Fury FC. Davies signed with the Whitecaps’ first team on 15 July and made his debut on 16 July 2016, again making him the youngest player to have a contract in the MLS.
