Benfica showed an unforgettable performance last night at the Anfield. The match will surely put a bruise mark on the Red’s history. The Reds are the most dangerous team this season. Scoring three goals against Liverpool’s home game is truly something unexpected. When Liverpool visited Benfica for their away game, they dismissed Benfica by 3-1.

Unfortunately, even after the draw by 3-3, Benfica flailed to stop Liverpool from reaching the semifinals. From the two-leg match, their total point is 6-4. And this point ensures Liverpool’s entry to the Champions League semifinals. On the other hand, Benfica is returning home with an empty hand. Not completely empty, their hard fight against Liverpool will be a forever memorable event in this season.

In the first leg match, Liverpool was ahead of the Benfica by 3-1. Probably that’s why Klopp put a bit infirm team to play against Benfica. Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane, Trent Alexander Arnold, and Fabinho, no one stepped into the field in the main 11. Even after this, Liverpool’s attacking stayed strong, and their defense system fell apart. Benfica took this opportunity and broke all the barriers of Liverpool, and in 90 minutes, they scored three goals against the most powerful team in the league.

Though, Liverpool was ahead of Benfica at the beginning. At the 21 minutes, from the corner shot of Kostas Tsimikas, IbrahimaKonaté scored the first goal. But they didn’t hold that position for too long; a missed tackle of James Milner helped Benfica to get in control of the ball. And before understanding the situation, Goncalo Ramos put the ball inside Liverpool’s goal post.

Roberto Firmino scored two goals in the second halftime and ensured Liverpool’s ticket for the championship semifinals. At that time, the two legs’ combined score is then 6-2. But that didn’t lower the confidence level of Benfica.

Liverpool likes to play in a high defense system, which means their defense play is slightly higher than usual. But to play in this way, Liverpool’s Virgil Van Dijk technique is very important. But he wasn’t there in the last match, and Benfica took advantage of Van Dik’s absence.

Benfica uses the vacant space of Liverpool’s backward defense. Ukraine striker Roman Yaremchukand Uruguay’s star Darwin Núñez used that space properly and scored one goal each.

But even after the draw, Klopp’s team is ahead by a point 6-4, which gives Liverpool the tickets for the Championship semifinal, where they will face Villarreal.

What does Liverpool say about their mistakes?

Though Liverpool confirmed their position in the championship semifinals after the match, they were questioned about the given performance.

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp was asked about the match, and he said, “The day we qualify for the Champions League semi-final, and I’m not happy, please come and knock me out.”

“It was not exactly what we wanted, but it is not important because if we played the best game of the season tonight, it wouldn’t have made it more likely to get to the final. We are thorough, and that’s all that matters, and I’m really happy.”
