How does the FIFA World Cup standings system function?

On the 20th of November, all 32 teams competing at 2022’s FIFA Men’s World Cup will start their journey in Qatar.

But, before that happens, those already qualified teams must be split into eight groups. With the tournament’s round-robin structure, the four bracket teams will play each other for a single match; if it’s the World Cup, only the top two teams in each group progress into the next round.

But, until the draw is concluded, the draw will not be able to move forward. This is to ensure that the teams are in the correct groupings. This is a strange step, but one that is crucial to the overall planning for the entire event.

The 29 teams that were selected will be split into four groups, and each group will be determined by the team’s position in the current FIFA Men’s World Ranking. Randomization will be employed to determine the teams in all four pools are placed into any of the 8 groups.

The four pots are available to teams that are qualified. Teams ranked between eighth and fifteenth are placed into Pot 2, teams ranked 16th to twenty-third will be placed into Pot 3, and teams ranked between twenty-fourth and forty-eighth will be put into Pot 4. The first three pots were made up of the winners of the intercontinental playoffs (both played in June) and the winner in the second UEFA playoff.

It is impossible to combine two teams in the same bowl in the same group to ensure the purpose of fairness of the process. Pot 1 will consist of the seven teams with the most impressive qualifying records. They will only play each other during the final round if they make it through their respective groups.

Because Qatar’s group doesn’t include one of the best seven teams in their group, they will be able to achieve winning.
