Santiago Bernabeu witnessed one of the greatest comebacks in the history of the Champions League on Wednesday night. Real Madrid beat Man City by 6-5 goals on aggregate in the extra time to qualify for the UCL 2021-2022 final.

Two goals in two minutes from Rodrygo at the very death sent the match into extra time and Karim Benzema did the rest to send Real Madrid into the UCL Final.

Real Madrid Comeback in the 2nd Leg against Man City

Real Madrid did what was unthinkable, unimaginable, and incredible last night at Santiago Bernabeu. They proved the uncertainty of beautiful football and showed that games can change in the blink of an eye.

After losing by 4-3 goals against Man City in the UCL semi-finals first leg at Etihad Stadium, Real Madrid hosted the second leg on Wednesday. The Spanish giants needed a goal to level the match on aggregate.

But the calm and collected football by Guardiola’s men prevented the home team from creating any real threat. Benzema was not effective and Vinicius made some dangerous runs up the left flank.

In the 73rd minute, Bernardo Silva found space in the midfield and made a superb run before providing a wonderful ball right side into the box. Riyad Mahez fired it first time with his left foot, beating Courtois by a rocket, giving Man City 0-1 lead in the night, 3-5 goals on aggregate.

Real Madrid became frustrated as the clock ticked on. Carlo Ancelotti brought in Rodrygo for Toni Kroos in the 68th minute. In the 87th minute, Real Madrid cleared a Jack Grealish effort off the line which could cement an already buried match.

Trailing by 3-5 goals on aggregate with almost 90 minutes into the match, the home fans started to leave the stadium.

In the 90th minute, Karim Benzema provided a ball into the box from the left side which Rodrygo put into the nets from close range. Real Madrid made it 1-1 into the night, still trailing by 4-5 goals on aggregate with only minutes remaining.

In the blink of an eye, Rodrygo’s header found the back of the net in the 91st minute. Real Madrid did the unthinkable, scoring two goals in two minutes to make it 5-5 level on aggregate to send the match into extra time. They did it! They did it yet again in the UCL season 2021-2022. You couldn’t simply bury Real Madrid no matter how deep you dug. Man City had one foot into the Final, 6 minutes to defend their two goals lead, and they conceded two goals in two minutes.

5 minutes into the extra time, the tackle of Ruben Dias on Benzema went all wrong inside the box. Real Madrid got a penalty which Benzema stepped forward to take. The highest scorer in the UCL this season, Benzema, was too good to miss the penalty. The Frenchman buried it into the bottom right corner and buried Man City to complete yet another incredible comeback in the UCL season 2021-2022.

The Los Blancos have won the semi-final of the UCL season 2021-2022 by beating Man City 6-5 on aggregate. They are in the UCL final, set to play Liverpool in Paris on Saturday, 28 May 2022.
