French was born in Santa Barbara, California, to an Armenian mother, Nellie Louise Cowles, and Ted French, a 1940s actor and stuntman. He began his tv career primarily as a Western stuntman. His debut was an uncredited small role in the film Lassie. Following that, he played an uncredited appearance as an office clerk, in the 1060 Western film “The Magnificent Seven”. He also appeared in an episode of “Gunsmoke”, with his father.

Till 1974, French mostly appeared in various tv popular shows such as “Fargo”, “Agent 44” and various guest appearances. In 1974, he starred as “Isaiah Edwards” in the Western TV drama “Little House on the Prairie”. This role later granted him a place in the Hall of Great Western Performers of the National Cowboy.

After gaining popularity as “Mr. Edwards”, Victor starred more in various TV films. Other than Westerns, French acted in the role of a sergeant in a fantasy-comedy film, The Ghost of Buxley Hall (1980). He also appeared in the 1982 romance-drama film, An Officer and a Gentleman. Sadly, the actor died at the age of 54. Three months after being diagnosed with lung cancer, French passed away on June 15, 1989, at Sherman Oaks Community Hospital in Los Angeles, California.
