The fourth edition of Capital One’s The Match is set to commence next month where stars from major sports will be seen in action swinging the golf club.
What makes this extremely interesting is the open mic that all players have on their shirts. The jokes and little conversations they share with their partners and opposition is accessible to the live viewers as well.
And fans love to see their favourites sports personalities in action, playing a sport they don’t excel at. The competition format has been based on the modified alternate shot match play.
For the 2021 event, six-time major champion Phil Mickelson will once again become a partner with seven-time Super Bowl Champion and three-time NFL MVP Tom Brady.
The star-studded duo will come off against first-time participants in DeChambeau, the PGA TOUR’s current FedExCup leader, and the three-time NFL MVP and Super Bowl champion, Aaron Rodgers.
Mickelson paired up with Charles Barkley in the November 2020 venture to overwhelm Stephen Curry and Peyton Manning in Capital One’s The Match: Champions for Change.
The event is held to raise donations for several charities including Feeding America. This helps spread awareness about supporting local communities within the United States.
Capital One Head of External Affairs Andy Navarrete has said: “HBCUs are testaments to the ongoing achievements of the Black community in this country.”
“As part of our work to advocate for equity and justice, we are honoured to use the funds raised from Capital One’s The Match: Champions for Change to help strengthen HBCUs and create pathways to greater opportunity for the graduates of these vital institutions.”

The trash talk begins
Tom Brady is the first one to start the trash talk against his The Match’s opponent Aaron Rodgers. Both are still a few weeks due to meet each other on the golf course.
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers QB said: “I do think you have a partner that would probably like to go for it a little more often than he has in the past, so Bryson [DeChambeau], I’m glad you’re encouraging him to go for it when it’s on the line.”
Bryson DeChambeau, who is paired with Aaron Rodgers for the charity event also came up with a terrific response to Brady’s jab. The 27-year-old golfer remarked that he would offer Rodgers full decision-making authority to choose what shots to take.
Rodgers also had a cheeky reply for Brady. “We usually don’t get the option in my experience,” Rodgers responded.
