Matt Fitzpatrick from England was on a roll early in the US PGA Championship.
‘Long Jim’ Barnes, who immigrated to the United States from Cornwall, won this event – then in match play format – in 1916 and 1919. It was not played for the next two years.
Unfortunately, there has never been a flag of St George adjacent to a US PGA winner in more than a century.
Therefore, history will not be on Matt Fitzpatrick’s side at Southern Hills on day four; however, it will determine how significant a victory for the Yorkshireman would be.
With a third-round score of 67, Fitzpatrick made a strong statement of intent at a venue he felt did not suit his game.
His performance was marked by grit and determination. Fitzpatrick made bogeys on his first two holes before stabilizing to reach the turn in par.
A birdie at the 13th edged Fitzpatrick under par for the day – a strong enough position – before terrific birdies at each of the last two.
Fitzpatrick is three strokes off the lead, held by Mito Pereira.
Matt Fitzpatrick Round 4 Prediction:
Matt Fitzpatrick is the only golfer other than Pereira with a three-under-par round at Southern Hills.
With a three-under 67 on Saturday, the Englishman moved up to six-under.
So far, Fitzpatrick has scored 68, 69, and 67 in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and another similar round would be enough to secure first place.
Most other golfers struggled with consistency and bogeyed several holes before rebounding on Saturday.
Fitzpatrick reversed a back-to-back bogey start with six birdies and one bogey in the final 16 holes.
Fitzpatrick’s poor start is the only concern about his title contention, but he showed on Saturday that he could rebound from it and move near the top of the leaderboard.
Round 4 Odds:
Round 4 of the 2022 PGA Championship will be from Southern Hills Country Club on Sunday morning.
