Mito Pereira falls into that second set. Until Thursday and Friday, Pereira was only familiar to hard-core golf fans.

He enters the weekend at 8 under par, one stroke behind the leader Will Zalatoris. With his 6-under 64 in Round 2, he tied a career-low.

In this ranking, he is immediately ahead of many more, including Justin Thomas, Rory McIlroy, and Bubba Watson.

Who is Mito Pereira?

27-year-old Chilean player Pereira (born in Santiago) has played competitively since childhood.

Before turning professional, he played one collegiate golf season at Texas Tech (2014-15). He began his professional career on the Chilean Tour in 2015.

Next came the PGA Tour Latinoamerica, the Korn Ferry Tour, and the PGA Tour. This is his first entire season on the PGA Tour.

His Stats:

Pereira has won three times on the Korn Ferry Tour and once on the PGA Tour Latinoamerica. The last two of his wins came back to back in June 2021 on the Korn Ferry Tour.

He used these wins as a springboard to representing Chile at the 2021 Summer Olympics in Tokyo. He placed fourth in the men’s competition.

In his first full-time PGA Tour season, he finished third at the Fortinet Championship in California.

He made $1.37 million and was ranked No. 46 in the FedEx Cup entering the PGA.

The 2022 PGA Championship is not his first major championship. In 2019, he played in the U.S. Open and missed the cut.

His PGA Championship Performance:

The model predicts a big shock at the PGA Championship in 2022: Pereira, one shot off the lead, stumbles badly and does not even make the top three.

The 27-year-old shot a 64 on Friday, the second-best round of the day. Nevertheless, history indicates Pereira won’t win the 2022 PGA Championship.

Seven major championships have been played at Southern Hills, and all seven champions have led or co-led after 36 holes.

Pereira also entered this week’s event ranked 160th in overall putting (1.619) and 167th in one-putt percentage (38.25), which doesn’t bode well for his chances this weekend.

Mito Pereira at Southern Hills

According to McClure’s model, several other golfers have a better value in the PGA Championship odds, making Pereira someone avoid.

Interestingly, Cameron Young, a 45-1 long shot, runs into contention. This makes him a great sleeper pick for the PGA Championship weekend since he has a better chance of winning than his odds suggest.

It will be a long weekend for the 25-year-old American as he enters the weekend 2-under par and tied for 10th place.

However, Zalatoris’s stumble would make the field significantly more open for some golfers with longer odds.

Young has finished in the top ten four times this season, including the top three in his last two starts. This year, he has been one of the PGA Tour’s longest players off the tee, averaging 315.7 yards per drive.

That can help him pick up strokes quickly, so make sure to bet on him in your 2022 PGA Championship bets.
