Qualification for the Ryder Cup 2021 is heating up as the team line-ups start to take shape. The tournament is scheduled to begin on 24 September. Read this article for the Ryder Cup standings 2021, and the USA and Europe confirmed teams.

Below we take a look at how qualifying works, who is in the frame and the contenders to be selected as a captain’s pick:

How does the qualifying work?

Team Europe:

The European Ryder Cup standings 2021 are based on two lists – the European Points List and the World Points list.

The top four players will qualify from the European Points list along with the top five players in the World Points list who are not already in on the European Points list. The qualification period will end after the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth on September 12.

Team USA:

The USA Ryder Cup standings 2021 are based on a single list made up of a points system. Six players qualified from this, with the qualifying period ending following the BMW Championship on August 29.

The Americans have gone the opposite way from Europe in terms of captain’s picks, increasing the number from four to six.

The initial six positions in the team were chosen top six in the USA’s points list, which is taken from prize money in select events since 2019 (all majors and PGA Tour events in 2020 and 2021).

Harrington has already confirmed that Ian Poulter is highly likely to be one of his three additional picks for Team Europe if fit:

“If he still has two legs by the time the Ryder Cup comes around in 2021, it would be extraordinary for someone like Ian not to get in based on what he has done in the past.”

Lowry would hope to be in the mix for a pick if he fails to make automatic qualification, while there are also a number of experienced players with excellent Ryder Cup pedigree currently outside of the nine qualification spots.

Those players include Henrik Stenson, Justin Rose, Sergio Garcia, Ian Poulter, and Francesco Molinari.
