Sam Burns has earned his first PGA Tour win at last season’s Valspar Championship, but five months later Burns has caught it up with his second title at Sanderson Farms Championship 2021.
In a six-hole stretch, Sam Burns ran off four birdies to start the back nine and pulled away for a 5-under 67 to win the Sanderson Farms Championship.
Burns won by playing flawlessly on the back nine against a list of contenders who were looking for their first victory. He confiscated restraint with a 15-foot birdie putt on the par-3 13th, a 5-iron to 15 feet that set up a two-putt birdie on the next hole, and then an excellent pitch from behind the green on the reachable par-4 15th for a tap-in birdie.
Betted to a two-shot lead going down the 18th, he ensured a stable bogey from the greenside bunker to attain a one-shot victory over resurgent Nick Watney and PGA Tour rookie Cameron Young.
His victory only solidified the lesson that, he didn’t need to be perfect to win. He was just trying to do too much. It was a rare off-week for a performer who ranked ninth in that stat last season when he not only picked up his first win but also advanced to the TOUR Championship for the first time.
