Thursday marks the second day of the 2022 UIL football state championships in Texas. The championship games run through Saturday, ending with the Conference 6A Division I. There will be 12 games of just state championships that will be played at AT&T Stadium in Arlington.
This game will be the second of three games today, as the Poth Pirates (14-1) take on the Gunter Tigers (15-0). The Tigers may be undefeated after dominating most of the season, they are coming off a semifinal win that was too close for comfort, especially with a spot in the championship on the line.
The Wildcats got off to a good start by outscoring Gunter 14-7 in the first quarter, but Gunter buckled down and only gave up six the rest of the way, which was in the fourth quarter.
Poth really didn’t have that problem in its semifinal game. The Pirates beat the Harmony Eagles 51-28 to earn a spot in this game. Poth was up 31-14 at the half. While Harmony got as close as 31-21, Poth turned on the afterburners late in the third and went up as much as 44-21 after the quarter. Will we see another high-scoring game today that these two teams have been used to all season?
How will Poth do taking the step up against an ACC opponent? Vegas thinks they can hang around in this one, so let’s take a look at the odds.
Gunter will need to be great for Poth to beat Gunter, as he has for much of this season. Gunter is averaging 20.3 points and 4.6 assists out of the backcourt for the Paladins high-powered offense. They’re scoring 82.3 points a game and are shooting 50.4% from the floor, which is the 12th best in the country. They are efficient but don’t play fast, and they’re 106th in KenPom’s adjusted tempo compared to Gunter, which ranks 44th.
Gunter scores 81 points per game while playing much faster than Poth, which is more reliable from a betting perspective. If Poth goes cold from the field, then they’ll struggle to score because they rely on their offense being so efficient, but Gunter doesn’t need to be perfect because they’re playing faster and getting more opportunities. They also play defense which is something that Poth doesn’t do.
Meanwhile, Gunter came up short against the Miami (Fla.) Hurricanes this past Saturday, falling 80-73. A silver lining for the Wolfpack was the play of guard Jarkel Joiner, who had 26 points.
The Paladins are expected to lose this next one by 7. Those who got lucky with them against the spread this past Saturday might want to hold off on placing bets this time since the squad has yet to string together back-to-back wins against the spread.
Gunter’s loss took them down to 8-3, while Poth’s victory pulled them up to 7-3. A win for Gunter would reverse both their bad luck and Poth’s good luck. We’ll see if Gunter can pull off that tough task or if Poth keeps their momentum going.
