Double Olympic marathon champion Eliud Kipchoge was all smiles as he confirmed his readiness for another ‘good race’ on Sunday (25 September) at the Berlin Marathon.
The Kenyan athletics star returns to the German capital, where he raced to the world record of 2:01:39 in 2018.
Kipchoge is expected to better the mark that has remained untested since Ethiopian Kenenisa Bekele nearly lowered it on the same course in 2019 with his 2:01.41 run.
“I am absolutely in shape. That’s why I am here. I expect a very good race on Sunday,” said Kipchoge at the event press conference held on Friday in Berlin, where he has been training since Tuesday.
The 37-year-old hopes to maintain his usual trademark smile when he crosses the finish line in what could be the fastest time over the 42.195 km race.
“Positivity is what drives a sportsman and any human being in this world,” he said to explain why he never let the pain show on his face while running.
“If you are positive, then you can push limits. If you think otherwise, you will start going back.”

Meseret Gola is the only woman on the NN Running Team squad who will run in the German capital. The Ethiopian athlete has shown great improvement in her marathon times. In 2021 she ran a 2:28:30 in Siena, Italy, followed by a 2:24:09 in Barcelona only a few months later. This year she has already improved her best in the marathon, running a 2:20:50 in Sevilla to finish 2nd.
Three NN Running Team athletes ligning up at the start when zooming in on the male field. The fastest man alive, Eliud Kipchoge, has returned to the German capital. It will be his fifth time running the BMW Berlin Marathon, and so far, Kipchoge has already won three times, including his 2:01:39 world record performance in 2018. What can the Kenyan athlete do this year? Furthermore, NN Running Team athletes Noah Kipkemboi and Moses Koech will also participate in the race as pacers to Kipchoge.
