The submission artist Charles Oliviera is ready to pounce for a victory against Bellator Champion Michael Chandler at the UFC 262 main event.
Both fighters, who are different from each other in terms of fighting style, will face off for the UFC featherweight strap. Oliviera is an expert when it comes to the ground game. He has 63% of his wins via submission.
On the flip side, Chandler is a KO machine who has made a name for himself in various top-notch MMA promotions around the globe. He has got 45% of his wins by T/KO.
They were given the title shot after formerly undefeated champ Khabib Nurmagomedov confirmed his retirement.
UFC President Dana White accepted the Eagle’s retirement months after he hanged his gloves inside the octagon where he beat Justin Gaethje fair and square via triangle choke.
Since Khabib is no more an official member of the lightweight division, Oliviera and Chandler will have the chance to become UFC champ for the first time in their careers.
Oliviera is high on confidence for the UFC 262 fight as he overwhelmed a lightweight juggernaut in Tony Ferguson in their last meeting at UFC 256 in December 2020.
Recently, the UFC posted a teaser for their popular series Countdown for the coming main event. The video showed both title contenders busy in their training camps prior to the fight.
In the short clip, the Brazilian professional mixed martial artist called the fight “the greatest opportunity” to make it big in a pro-MMA career.
“So he has a win in the UFC, I’m coming off eight consecutive wins. It’s my moment, it’s my time on May 15th,” De Bronx remarked.
Whereas, Chandler said: “This is absolutely the greatest opportunity of my life, fighting for that vacant UFC title. Charles Oliveira is going to realize right away that he is locked into the octagon with a different animal.”
UFC fighters pick their favourites
Based on their strengths and weakness, several MMA professionals have already begun predicting the winner of the UFC 262 main event.
UFC Bantamweight Champion Aljamain Sterling said that Chandler will be the firm favourite for the UFC gold.
Speaking to MMA Pros Pick at Lynch on Sports, the Funkmaster said: “You know what if I’m gonna pick … So I do think that Chandler has the goods to find that quit button but then those step in knees that Oliveira does, so lovely man, it’s scary. Ah…I’m gonna go Chandler. I’m gonna go Chandler.”
Former UFC fighter Ben Askren feels the same.
He said that he would be cheering for Michael Chandler since he doesn’t think very highly of Charles Oliveira. But Askren admitted that Oliviera impressed him by defeating Kevin Lee and then Tony Ferguson.
Askren added: “I was really impressed. But I think he is going to struggle with Chandler because Chandler obviously has strong wrestling, and he hits really hard.”
