This will be the third time both fighters will take on each other. It is expected to bring in more pay-per-view sales and an overall audience than previous encounters due to an immense hype about the event.
In the 2014 fight, Mcgregor knocked out Poirier after dominating the entire fight. Whereas, Poirier outclassed McGregor in the 2021 rematch.
The Diamon got his revenge by outplaying him on tactics before delivering a second-round KO that sent the MMA world in a frenzy. The Notorious was aggressive in the first round, but Poirier’s consistent leg kicks gradually got to him. A limping McGregor left the arena on crutches.
When will the McGregor vs Poirier fight happen?
The third and final fight between McGregor and Poirier will take place as the main event at UFC 264 on July 10, 2021. This fight will bring out the best in the Notorious and Poirier both.
McGregor is aware that his reputation as the promotion’s biggest superstar is on the line in July, hence, he will give everything to come out as a winner.
His recent statement about the fight has been circulating on social media, urging the fans to wait for the Irishman to go berserk in the Poirier match.
In a Twitter post, the Notorious said that the doubts over him have got him even more pumped to clinch the trilogy showdown. He wrote: ” [On] July 10, I will do this absolutely flawlessly. We have these clowns sussed and fully! They wanna play a game of tactics? No problem, see you there. You’ve awoken a beast. A beast with the backing of a much higher power! Say your prayers.”
On the flip side, the Diamond has said that he is ready to face whatever his rival is going to throw at him in the final showdown at UFC 264. He has already started his training with his coach Mike Brown, the former UFC, DEEP, and BodogFIGHT fighter.
Poirier likely to bag the biggest paycheck of UFC career
The Diamond was considered an underdog against McGregor, but he proved the critics wrong at UFC 257. This makes both UFC stars equally favourites for the July 10 match.
Undoubtedly, this will be the biggest payday of Poirier’s career, one of the reasons he chose to take on the Irishman for the third time instead of picking a title fight after Khabib Nurmagomedov vacated the lightweight strap.
Even UFC President Dana White acknowledged this as a genius move. He called Poirier “smart” for going after the money fight instead of calling for a title shot. Nonetheless, the UFC has got Michael Chandler and Charles Oliviera booked for the vacant title.
It is likely that the winner of the title fight will take on the winner of the UFC 264 main-event.
