Clippers’ Kawhi Leonard signs a deal worth $176.3 million
This has certainly strengthened his position in the team. According to The Athletic’s Shams Charania, the whole agreement is worth $173.6 million.
Performance in hometown team
The two-time NBA champion has recently returned to his hometown team. Leonard has an average of 26 points, 6.8 rebounds, and five assists per game in his two seasons with Los Angeles.
It was a shock for his fans to see Kawhi Leonard being injured with an ACL injury in the semifinal game of the Western Conference. His overall performance was decent as he averaged 24.8 points per game (on 51/40/89 shooting splits) over 34.1 minutes.
Leonard’s injury brought a major setback for the team as they lost to their opponent the Phoenix Suns in six games in the finals.
He had also undergone surgery on his half-torn right ACL during the offseason. There is no news of when he is going to recover from his injury but it is most likely that he will miss a considerable amount of the 2021-22 season. However, his fans will be hoping for his speedy recovery.
“For now, we will do whatever we can to support him in his recovery from injury. We look forward to seeing him back where he wants to be, on the court with his teammates,” The president of basketball operations, Lawrence Frank said.

Kawhi turned down an offer of $36 million earlier in the offseason. Then all of a sudden he started making negotiations with the Clippers.
Team management views on Leonard’s new contract
Lawrence Frank said in a statement, “This agreement marks another important moment for our franchise and our fans, as we strive to create a championship-caliber organization, where players find the success and fulfillment they seek. We’re eager to continue building with Kawhi,”
Leonard’s earnings for the whole contract
Spotrac reported that throughout his NBA career Leonard has been able to earn about $ 149, 088,735. He will be able to attain much more than that in all of his four seasons of the 4-years deal with the Los Angeles team.
A player option
Kawhi has played for the Clippers for 2 years hence, he is not capable of attaining the 5-year contract. He made a 4-year deal instead, which is also the longest in this year.
Season 2023-24 will be a player option. This season will also be the final one and would align Leonards’s contract with his teammate Paul George. Paul signed this extension in the last fall season because he could not just boost his income by lingering for free agency.
This 4-years deal of Kawhi would give him another option to extend his contract and can add extra 3 seasons alongside extensions. Which option Kawhi chooses is not important for the Clippers, all that counts for them is the satisfaction of its sportsmen.
