Golden State Warriors star Klay Thompson suffered the first ejection of his NBA career after he confronted Phoenix Suns’ Devin Booker during an action-packed encounter at the Food Print Center.
The Suns ran out easy winners 134-105, and the defeat will act as a wake-up call for the reigning NBA champions, and it’s one that clearly left its mark on Thompson as he was ejected mid-way through the third quarter.
Golden State Warriors have started the season with a mediocre 2-2 record, but when it comes to the best NBA bets today, it’s worth noting that Steve Kerr’s side is still joint favorites with most sportsbooks, tied with the Boston Celtics.
Klay Thompson and Devin Booker were at loggerheads for much of the clash, but it appears that the respect between the pair continues, even after their on-court disagreements, with the Suns’ star commenting afterward;
“[Thompson] was just having a tough night,”
“I think everything plays into that. Just frustration; I’ve been there before. You know what [the Warriors] have; they have four rings, and they’re going to use that in all the trash talk, rightfully so. Respectfully. But that don’t have nothing to do with competing.”
It is perhaps unsurprising that the Warriors may be finding it hard to replicate the levels they hit during last season’s title charge, and it’s something Kerr is keen to address;
“There was just a lack of intensity, physicality, whatever you want to call it,”
This assessment was echoed by Draymond Green;
“The commitment to defense is not there,”
“That’s something we have to be better at. It starts with me, and I’ll make sure we get there.”
“But right now, we’re a decent offensive team and a bad defensive team.”
Clearly, it’s very early days, we are only four games into an 82-game regular season, and the Warriors are very much capable of getting back into gear and are likely to do just that. The win for the Suns puts them top of the Atlantic Division with a 3-1 record.
Booker is proving, once again, to be a key performer and his display against the Warriors led to glowing praise from head coach Monty Williams, who stated;
“There are no weaknesses in his game, and he’s scoring everywhere,”
“He’s scoring in the post; he’s scoring from three, he’s scoring off the dribble, he’s been attacking the rim, getting to the basket, transition and really efficient.”
Booker has racked up three 30+ point games from his opening four games, and he’s also amassed 23 assists over that period, and that’s why Williams went on to proclaim him “probably the most complete player in the league right now.”
As to the trash-talking between Booker and Thompson, it apparently related almost exclusively to the Warriors man, confronting the three-time NBA All-Star pick and repeatedly relaying that he has ‘four rings’ an undeniable fact but don’t rule out the Phoenix Suns guard getting one of those himself in the near future.
