The FIA plans to impose tougher speed restrictions on F1 drivers in double yellow flag zones behind safety cars. This will be starting from the upcoming Monaco Grand Prix. The move comes as part of the FIA’s continuous efforts to prioritize safety in the sport. F1 drivers will now be required to adhere to a stricter speed limit when passing through double yellow flag zones. This will be during both safety car and virtual safety car procedures.
Previously, the International Sporting Code only mandated drivers to “reduce…speed significantly. Do not overtake, and prepare to change direction or stop” when encountering double yellow flags. However, the introduction of the new regulations will now necessitate drivers to maintain a designated speed limit specifically within double yellow flag areas while under safety car or virtual safety car conditions.
The decision to impose a specific speed limit is for providing drivers with a tool to navigate incidents more effectively. Moreover, enhancing the safety of track workers. FIA technical director Tim Goss highlighted the importance of this change. Stating, “What we want to do is to provide drivers with a tool to help them during incidents and to make races even safer.”
The FIA will ensure that drivers receive both visual and audible warnings to duly inform them about double yellow flag zones. Eliminating any surprises and allowing them to slow down accordingly. Additionally, the delta time concept, which provides drivers with reference speeds during safety car and virtual safety car periods. It will be extended to include double-waved yellow flags. This means that teams will have to ensure their cars strictly adhere to the designated delta time. Ensuring reduced speeds within the double yellow flag areas.
While the new system may introduce potential disadvantages for drivers who have to slow down for double yellows that have ended before following cars pass through. The FIA maintains that safety must always take precedence over competitive aspects. Olivier Hulot, FIA Head of F1 Electronics, emphasized. “For the FIA, safety is paramount and when there is a hazard on track or marshals on track. Then we have to minimize the risks no matter what.”
