Spaniard Carlos Sainz Jr has extended his contract with Ferrari by two years until the end of 2024; the Formula 1 team announced on Thursday ahead of the fourth Grand Prix of the season this weekend in Imola (Italy).

The 27-year-old Sainz, son of two-time World Rally Champion Carlos Sainz, arrived at Ferrari in early 2021 after two seasons with the British McLaren team.

I have always said that there is no better Formula 1 team to race for. After more than a year with them, I can confirm that wearing this racing suit and representing this team is unique and incomparable,” he said in a Ferrari statement.

Since his debut in 2015 for Toro Rosso and after a stint at Renault (end of 2017-2018), Sainz junior has taken part in 143 Grands Prix, with eight podiums to the key.

Leclerc dominated Sainz at the beginning of the season

After finishing 6th in the championship twice with McLaren, he scored his best result in 2021, finishing 5th in his first year with the Scuderia – defying the odds by beating his Monegasque teammate Charles Leclerc.

In the 2022 season, Leclerc has taken over the lead at the wheel of a Ferrari that is once again dominant. After three rounds with 71 points, the Monegasque is the leader, ahead of George Russell (Mercedes) at 37 points and Sainz at 33.

The F1-75 is proving to be a cutting-edge car, allowing me to pursue my goals on the track, starting with my first victory in Formula 1,” said Sainz, “reinforced by this new proof of confidence” with this new contract.

With 20 more Grands Prix in this record season and thanks to a car that currently distances in performance and reliability from the Red Bull and Mercedes competitors, the Spaniard should have his chance.
