Last weekend, UFC 273 brought the two most powerful fighters in the same ring and gave the audience one of the most anticipated of the year. Khamzat Chimaev vs Gilbert Burns fought each other in the welterweight division. And Chimaev won the bout between them by split decision. Right after the loss, the Brazilian fighter proposed a rematch with Chimaev.
Chimaev is one of the most dangerous fighters in the welterweight division. He is still new in the fighting world compared to others. Chimaev total played in 11 fights. And managed to hold the unbeaten record for 11 matches in a row.
Burns was the biggest challenge in Chimaev’s career since April 9. After the end of the UFC 273, Chimaev got a new face in the division. Even before defeating Burns, everybody had to think twice before facing Chimaev. But now, Chimaev is surely a fearsome name for all the fighters.
Chimaev now has to face an even more powerful enemy. Dana White confirms that Chimaev will face Colby Covington in his next fight. The potential fight of Colby Covington vs Khamzat Chimaev will be seen as a title eliminator fight.
This will be an even more dangerous fight for Khamzat Chimaev. And a win against Covington win put Chimaev in the best position of rank. But he will surely have to practice a lot before going for the fight.
Though White says about the Chimaev vs Covington fight, we didn’t hear anything from Covington. Covington is even interested in the fight against Chimaev or not, still unclear. But soon, we will know what’s gonna be the next bout of Chimaev and Covington’s fight plan.
After getting defeat result by the decision, Burns immediately head for a rematch with Chimaev. He posted on social media that he wanted a rematch with Chimaev for five rounds fight. Burns posted on Twitter, “I call the cops [Covington] don’t show up, you know who to call @KChimaev 5 rounds.”
Khamzat Chimaev responds to Burns Rematch:
When they were looking for a fighter for the Chimaev, no one came forward to fight Chimaev. Then only Burns showed the courage to face Chimaev and agreed to fight. And we know the rest of the history.
After losing the fight, Burns told TSN (CA), “I believe we’re not done. When they offered me this fight, I asked for five rounds. I just think if it was five rounds, it would be way more entertaining. I think we’re not done. For sure, he moved forward in rank, and they wanna make the Colby fight. I just want one thing back from Khamzat.”
“I want the courtesy. I was No. 2, and I fought No. 11. I want a rematch with Khamzat. If he beats Colby, he’s going to fight Kamaru. I just want my rematch in the next three fights. I believe we’re not done.”
Chimaev takes the rematch offer, and he is ready to face Burns again. Chimaev says, “In 5 rounds, I will take your soul; see you soon, boy.”
