The Seattle Kraken now has partial ownership from Grammy-winning artist Macklemore and retired Seattle Seahawks running back Marshawn Lynch.
Macklemore and Lynch attended the Kraken’s 4-2 win over the Ottawa Senators on Monday at Climate Pledge Arena to celebrate joining the ownership group, and Macklemore stated that he expects to attend many more games in the future.
Macklemore stated that he began discussions with Kraken CEO Tod Leiweke and his brother Tim Leiweke, CEO of Oak View Group. It renovated Climate Pledge Arena, about possibly joining the ownership group prior to the expansion draft on July 21, 2018. Lynch became involved in the case within the last six months.
“I am a Seattle sports fan through and through, have been my entire life,” Macklemore said. “I think that sports define a city. They bring people together. It gives us one common purpose to root for.”
“It’s really the spirit of the city in so many ways, and to be a part of that new era that is the Kraken, that is the NHL in Seattle, that is the new arena, to do that was a no-brainer in terms of the opportunity. It’s just something that I can’t really even put into words.
“It’s a big moment for myself, for Marshawn — we’re both super pumped to be involved — for my family and for the future.”
Lynch played in the NFL for 12 years, including seven seasons with the Seattle Seahawks. During the 2013 season, he was instrumental in the team’s Super Bowl victory.
Since his retirement in 2020, the 35-year-old has launched a marijuana firm and controlled a team in the Fan Controlled Football league, among other interests.
The current business allows him to promote Seattle’s new hockey club, which is nearing the end of its inaugural NHL season. With 54 points in 74 games, the team sits bottom in the Pacific Division and out of postseason contention.
As a native of Seattle, Macklemore is also well-known for his love of the city. The Grammy winner is frequently spotted at Seahawks and Mariners games, and in 2019, she bought a stake in Major League Soccer’s Seattle Sounders alongside then-Seahawks player Russell Wilson.
Macklemore and Lynch have joined the Kraken Investor Group, which is overseen by David Bonderman, the Kraken’s creator and principal owner, and Samantha Holloway, the Kraken’s executive committee chairman.
Macklemore and Lynch are anticipated to oversee Kraken and Climate Pledge Arena projects to interact with hockey fans, music fans, and community members in their new roles with the first-year NHL expansion franchise.
