Summary
Sadibou Sy surprised Rory MacDonald with a unanimous victory (30-27 x2, 29-28). He qualifies for the PFL middleweight playoffs on Friday in the sixth gala of the 2022 season.
Despite the loss, MacDonald (23-9-1) also qualified for the playoffs. He even placed first in the middleweight division.
He scored six points in his first-round submission. And win over Brett Cooper on May 6.
In the semifinals, he will cross swords with Magomed Umalatov. Magomed defeated Jarrah Al-Silawi by knockout in the first round.
MacDonald, who started as the favorite, suffered a third defeat in his last three fights. He has a 2-3 record since his PFL debut.
Sy (11-6) set the tone in the first round by cutting MacDonald under his right eye.
The second round saw a few shots exchanged. But MacDonald managed to keep his opponent with his back against the cage for most of the encounter.
MacDonald attempted the first one to the ground in the opening minutes of the third round. Still, Sy continued to defend well by standing up to Rory’s superiority.
With two minutes to go, it was finally Sy who managed to be the only one brought to the ground of the fight.
After the fight, Sy thanked MacDonald. McDonald forced him to prepare for this duel against a well-established fighter.
“I would wake up at night and say, ‘Damn, I’m up against Rory!’ He made me better,” said Sy. Sy ranks second in the middleweight standings. And will face Brazil’s Carlos Leal in the semifinals of the playoffs.
Two-time middleweight champion Ray Cooper III beat Brett Cooper. By technical knockout after just 24 seconds of action in the first round.
He was already eliminated from the playoffs by Magomed Magomedkerimov’s victory over Dilano Taylor. By technical knockout in the second round of the previous fight.
Harrison, true to herself
Two-time lightweight champion Kayla Harrison dominated Kaitlin Young. He wins by technical knockout in the first round.
Harrison remains undefeated in 14 mixed martial arts fights. Harrison was the Olympic judo champion in 2012 and 2016.
Ranked third, she will face Martina Jindrova in the semifinals.
Larissa Pacheco beat Genah Fabian by technical knockout in the first round. She is the top seed in the lightweight category. She will face Olena Kolesnyk in the semifinals.
