Manchester City

Manchester City made history when they became only the second English Premier League team to complete the treble of the Champions League, Premier League, and FA Cup. But the 1-0 victory over Inter Milan to win the Champions League not only completed the treble for City but also signaled the end of the 2022/23 season, which also seems to have been the catalyst for departures from the club.

Could it now be the case that after climbing to the top of the mountain, Manchester City now has to rebuild another side for the future?

Manchester City still the team to beat

The bookmakers don’t see any potential exodus as a problem. In the latest betting to win the Premier League, Manchester City are -163 to win the title for a fourth successive season. Behind City, Arsenal is next at +650, with Liverpool and Manchester United next at +700 and +850 respectively. A bet on Man City to win the Champions League is priced at +200.

So who has left Manchester City so far? And should fans be starting to worry?

Enzo Maresca

Italian Enzo Maresca was one of Guardiola’s coaches at the Etihad Stadium in their treble-winning season.

Maresca has worked at the Etihad on two occasions. He first joined the club in 2020 to work with the Elite Development Squad, where he remained for one season. Maresca then returned to Italy as head coach of Parma in 2021 but was dismissed in November after a poor start to the season.

He returned to the Etihad in the summer of 2022 as one of Pep Guardiola’s assistant managers. Now the Italian has left again, this time, to manage newly relegated Leicester City in the English Championship.

İlkay Gündoğan

Also on his way out of the Etihad Stadium is club captain İlkay Gündoğan. The German international turned down a new offer from City, instead choosing to ply his trade in Spain with Barcelona.

The influential midfielder is leaving for a new challenge. At 32 years of age, Gündoğan knows his chances of a move to a club the size of Barcelona will recede with every passing year and decided that now was the right time to go.

Who else might be heading for the exit?

And what of the other players rumored to be pondering an exit from the Etihad? Two names heavily linked with moves away from City this summer are Bernardo Silva and Kyle Walker.

Starting with Walker, the full-back is supposedly a target for Bayern Munich. The interest from Bayern has been reported by Sky Germany. But it has also been reported that City wants him to stay and has offered him a new contract.

Another man apparently in demand is Bernardo Silva. Barcelona head coach Xavi Hernandez has reportedly long been a huge admirer of the Portuguese. But as well as Barcelona, it is now rumored that PSG are interested.

Potential new signings will need time to integrate

If Walker and Silva are to join Gündoğan in heading for the exit, they are players the club will miss.

A club with the assets of Manchester City can replace them all. But integrating their respective replacements into the team won’t happen overnight, meaning City may not be challenging for the treble soon. But in general, City fans shouldn’t be getting too worried just yet.
