The French duo Thom Gicquel and Delphine Delrue reached the podium in the mixed doubles category.
France’s Thom Gicquel and Delphine Delrue became European badminton runners-up in mixed doubles on Saturday morning in Madrid, losing to Germany’s Mark Lamsfuss and Isabel Lohau 2 sets to 1 (16-21, 22-20, 21-16).
The French, seeded number 2 and 11th in the world, hoped to become the first tricolors crowned champions of Europe but failed in their quest after fighting for 1 hour and 13 minutes against the pair seeded number 4.
With silver, the pair won their first medal in a major international event and offered themselves an unprecedented result in the history of French mixed badminton.
The French delegation left Madrid with two medals, the silver of Gicquel-Delrue being added to the bronze obtained the day before by Toma Popov in men’s singles.
