This summer, he was playing for Seahawks Jody Allen’s Portland Trail Blazers, on their NBA Summer League team.

“I was never going to leave basketball just to leave basketball and had a plan, but I had to make sure that the plan was right,” Vital told KPLC television, “I’m leaving basketball with things on the table. I had exhibit 10s (one-year, minimum contracts in the NBA), two-ways (contracts paid depending on how many games a player plays in the NBA and developmental leagues), and overseas deals.”

“For me to leave that, I had to have something in football.”

He also tweeted in his official account “Thank you Basketball you gave me everything and created opportunities for me. Time for a new chapter #NFL”

There has been a long time since Vital played football. He gave up this sport in 8th grade. So he will need to go through a heavy training session with the practice team.

After his four-year career at Baylor, Vital went undrafted this summer. He also signed with the Portland Trail Blazers and wanted to be a part of their summer-league squad. Vital appeared in three games for the Blazers and scored four points on 2-of-4 shooting. He averaged 1.3 points and 4.0 rebounds on 50 percent shooting before opting to pursue football.

In addition to the Antonio Gates comparisons Vital mentions, there are a couple more obvious names that come to mind. Former Baylor basketball players Rico Gathers and Is Wainwright both tried their hands at football following successful basketball careers.

Gathers had been drafted in the 6th round of the 2016 NFL by the Cowboys. He appeared in the practice for two seasons before he played in 2018. He also had three catches for 45 yards in his fifteen NFL games.

Wainwright could not make it to the NFL but he recorded four catches for 34 yards and 2 touchdowns in 2017 as part of the Baylor football team.

Vital did not play for the Baylor football team at any point and focused on basketball throughout his college career. He had an average of 5.6 points and 6.7 rebounds on his way to a national championship. In Big 12 All-Defensive team member, Vital named his name for the third time in his career.

The Seahawks have announced a 53 man roster this week. But Parkinson suffered a broken foot in training camp. His status for the regular season is not fixed.

If he does miss time, the Seahawks could promote another tight end in his absence. In a famous next-man-up league, will it be a Vital’s shot? The fans will have to wait some more days to know that.
