The Sardinia Cup Water Polo 2022 gets underway on Monday, 8 August at Sassari, Italy. It is the 2nd edition of the competition, being played among four of the top-ranked water polo teams Italy, Croatia, Serbia, and Greece. The competition will wrap up on Day 3, Wednesday, August 10. Sardinia Cup Water Polo 2022: Preview
There will be two matches each day for a total of six matches. Every team will play each other once, and the team with the highest points will be the champion.
The newly-crowned World League winner Italy hosts the competition for the second consecutive time. Croatia will try to defend their title who won the Sardinia Cup last year in Cagliari. The other two teams are Serbia and Greece.
All the teams will miss some star players due to injury. Italy will miss their left-handed goal-getter Gonzalo Echenique due to injury. Greece is missing their first-choice goalkeeper Emmanouil Zerdevas due to a left-hand injury.
Croatia will miss Ante Vukicevic because of health problems. On the other hand, Serbia will miss their two Olympic champions Nikola Jaksic and Djordje Lazic.
Results:
After two days of thrilling games, we are down to the final day. The teams have played two games each. Serbia is the only undefeated team in the competition, beating Croatia and Greece. They will take on Italy in today’s decisive first match.
On the other hand, Italy and Greece have both won and lost a piece. Italy suffered defeat against Greece but bounced back against Croatia on Day 2. Again, Greece won against Italy and lost to Serbia on Day 2. Croatia is the only winless team after the first two days of action.
Croatia and Greece will meet in today’s final match. Every team still has the chance to go on top of the standings except Croatia. So, buckle up for the thrilling final day.
