The tournament will take place from September 12 to September 18 in Chennai, India. The event started in 1996 as Maharashtra Open; later, it changed its name to the Chennai open.
As said earlier, this year, the WTA event is taking place in India for the first time since 2008. Serena Williams won the last edition in 2008 when it was held as the 2008 Canara Bank Bangalore Open. She beat Switzerland’s Patty Schnyder 7–5, 6–3 in the final.
The legendary American tennis player stood on her glorious World No. 1 rank in WTA singles for a record 319 weeks. Her kit is rich with 23 Grand slams singles titles. It’s the most by any player in the Open Era and the second-most right behind Margaret Court’s 24.
