Match Preview
Former World No. 1 Novak Djokovic reached the quarter-finals with two straight-set wins. The Serb cruised past Cristian Garin in the First Round with a 6-1, 6-1 victory. The 21-time Grand Slam winner and legend of the game Djokovic took care of Van de Zandschulp in the Second Round. He beat the Dutchman with a dominating 6-3, 6-1 set.
Djokovic couldn’t play in the U.S. Open due to his unvaccinated status against Covid. He seems to be making up for that, having won the Tel Aviv Open last week. The Serb won his third title this year, defeating Marin Cilic in Tel Aviv.
Elsewhere, Karen Khachanov beat Marin Cilic in three sets in the Second Round to reach the last 8. The Russian lost the opening set by 2-6. He bounced back in the second set and broke Cilic twice to win it 6-3. Khachanov saved two break points in two serves from a 3-1 lead and eventually won the match by 6-3.
Before that, the 26-year-old beat Maxime Cressy by 6-4, 7-6(3) sets in the First Round. After reaching his maiden Grand Slam semi-finals in the U.S. Open, it is Khachanov’s first tournament.
The winner of this match could meet world no. 3, Daniil Medvedev, in the semi-finals in a mouth-watering match.
