Roger Federer, seeded sixth this year, will kick off his Wimbledon campaign this season with a match against Adrian Mannarino at the All England Club on an outdoor grass court.

The 39-year-old Swiss star is the most successful player in Wimbledon’s history, bagging eight Grand Slam titles at the major tennis event in his career.

But the question is: Will Federer be able to replicate his antics of the last decade to overcome the inactivity of this year?

He is regarded as one of the hardest players to play against in general, not just at Wimbledon where he has had massive success.

Nevertheless, the 2019 runner-up is not in his best shape at the moment and his demoralizing defeat to Felix Auger-Aliassime last week at Halle showed that.

Let’s not forget that he also had to withdraw from French Open this year due to injury issues.

Federer has seemingly struggled against those opponents who are heavy servers, but this is not the case with Adrian Mannarino.

The French pro is neither the biggest of servers or ball-strikers on tour. However, he has the ability to startle with the shot angles that make him a difficult player to deal with.

Mannarino is not in a bad spot mentally considering that he reached the semifinals of the Mallorca Open recently. With ample practice, the 32-year-old will enter the contest against Federer brimming with confidence and self-belief.

This is perhaps his best chance to make it 1-6 against one of the greatest tennis players of all time.

Match prediction

In his previous six meetings against Adrian Mannarino, Federer has a 100% win record and the win percentage is likely to remain the same on Tuesday.

At the Golden Slam, Federer has beaten Mannarino twice, in 2011 and 2018. Moreover, the 39-year-old has lost only one set to the Frenchman.

Although the Swiss tennis veteran is a heavy favourite to win against his first-round opponent, he hasn’t lived up to his aura in the recent tournaments.

Hence, this is a tad tricky draw for the 39-year-old given his poor form since his comeback.

Which players are not playing Wimbledon?

Among some of the big names in the sport, Roger Federer and Naomi Osaka will not feature in the tournament.

Osaka has cited mental health to skip the tournament. While Nadal has been dealing with injury issues ever since the beginning of this year. The Spaniard will miss out on Tokyo Olympics too unlike Osaka who has guaranteed her presence for the Olympic Games.

Analysts reckon that their absence will ultimately affect the competition too.
