Alphonso Davies was born in a refugee camp in Buduburam, Ghana, to Liberian parents who were displaced during the Second Liberian Civil War as the fourth of 6 children.

Davies played football with Free Footie, a league for elementary school students who couldn’t afford the equipment, registration fees, and game transportation.

Then, he joined a soccer accelerator program at University Hill Secondary School and started playing for Edmonton Internationals and Edmonton Strikers.

At 14, he joined the Whitecaps FC Academy. In 2016, he signed with Whitecaps FC 2, becoming the youngest player to get a contract in the USL.

He debuted with the team in April 2016 and scored his first goal on 15 May 2016, which made him the youngest scorer in the USL’s history. He held this record until 2020.
