Roger Brandon Sloan was born in Calgary, Alberta, on May 15, 1987, but he grew up in Merritt, British Columbia. His father, a great golfer, taught him how to play when he was four.

He attended the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) on a golf scholarship. He played there for four years and got a degree in business. He was named to the All-Conference USA team three times and won two solo championships. 

Sloan turned professional in 2009 upon graduating from college. He joined the Canadian Tour, now known as the PGA Tour Canada. He won his first professional title at the 2011 Western Championship, shooting 23 strokes under par and defeating Stuart Anderson by three strokes.

He played on the Web.com Tour, which is now called the Korn Ferry Tour, in 2013 and 2014. At the 2014 Nova Scotia Open, he won his second competitive title. In a play-off, he beat Derek Fathauer with a par on the first extra hole. 

At the 2014 Frys.com Open, his first tournament on the PGA Tour, he shared for 37th place. In his first year, he had a hard time keeping his card. He only cut nine times out of 23 starts and ended up 179th in the FedEx Cup rankings. 

He did better on the PGA Tour in 2019–20, getting 14 cuts out of 22 starts and finishing in the top 10 twice.

He tied for fifth and seventh at the Puerto Rico Open and The Honda Classic, respectively. At the end of the FedEx Cup season, he was placed 92nd, so he kept his card for the next season.

He had his best year during the 2020–21 PGA Tour season. He made 18 cuts out of 30 starts and had three top-10 results.

He tied for second place at the Corales Puntacana Resort & Club Championship, tied for sixth place at the Barbasol Championship, and tied for second place at the Wyndham Championship.
