Abbott played junior cricket for Baulkham Hills Cricket Club and played grade cricket for Parramatta District.

Sean Abbott made his One-day International debut for Australia on 7 October 2014, in a series against Pakistan in the UAE.

In the same series, on 5 October 2014, the all-rounder made his T20 international debut. He was an excellent young bowler, effective in death overs. Abbott was named Australia’s Young Cricketer of the Year in January 2015.

After five years of hiatus, the all-rounder made his international return for Australia in 2019, taking 2/14 off his four overs in a T20 game against Pakistan.
