Tottenham

Tottenham head into the new season on the back of an unpleasant finish to the previous season.

The Whites were among the front runners in last term’s title race before they fell off. Eventually, the North London side finished outside the top four and will play in the Europa League this season against the much-desired Champions League competition.

Having returned to Europe this season, Spurs will be keen to make a mark in the Premier League, and here is a look at their chances. To that effect, Tottenham tickets will also see a surge in demand for the 2024/25 season.

Tottenham’s Summer Transfer Window Business So Far

Following last season’s exploits and struggles in attack, Tottenham went into the market in search of quality additions. While they did not get to address that at first in the transfer window, they managed to secure two bright prospects for the future in Archie Gray and Lucas Bergvall.

Yang Min-hyuk also joined from Gangwon FC, but he will remain with the South Korean club until January.

The major signing of striker Dominic Solanke from Bournemouth officially declared their transfer business open. The one-cap England international scored 19 Premier League goals last season — 21 across all competitions — and could finally replace Harry Kane for Spurs.

Manager Ange Postecoglou spoke about the arrival of the former Chelsea player, stating the club got the 26-year-old at a good time.

“We have got him at a really good time in his career,” the Australian tactician explained. “He has had to work his way back up which I always think is a good thing.

“Sometimes, when careers go smoothly, you wonder how people will handle setbacks, but he had setbacks earlier in his career. He has fought his way back and has become a really good Premier League striker now. He is really keen to push on. He wants to improve and make an impact so I think it’s a great time for us to bring him in.”

It is also expected that the Whites will make more signings before the end of the transfer window to fortify their squad and improve the areas that were a problem last season.

In terms of the exits, the club have allowed several first-team players to depart North London. The Whites have already parted ways with the likes of Eric Dier, Joe Rodon, and Ivan Perisic this summer.

At the same time, Emerson Royal has also left for Milan in the Italian Serie A. Tanguy Ndombele, Japhet Tanganga, and Ryan Sessegnon all left. In contrast, Bryan Gil and Pierre-Emile Højbjerg left on loan to Girona and Marseille, respectively.

Tottenham’s Chances in the Premier League

Spurs lost Harry Kane last summer, but skipper Son Heung-min played a big role in ensuring they didn’t miss him too much.

The South Korea international netted 17 goals in 35 Premier League outings, overperforming his xG by almost five and ensuring he’s scored at least 17 English top-flight goals in three of the last four seasons.

When he was not firing, the remainder of the attacking cast – Richarlison and Dejan Kulusevski did not produce outstanding numbers.

Therefore, Solanke, with his goals last season, is a great addition to the club as he will help solve the lack of goals in the absence of captain Son. Postecoglou’s statement further affirms the aforementioned comment.

“He was obviously one I was very keen to get in,” said Ange. “I think he will be a great fit for us in terms of the player he is and the point of his career where he is at.

“We identified him because he has the attributes we are looking for in terms of our position. He gives us some things we probably have been missing in the last 12 months, particularly when Richarlison was out last year.

“When Richy played he was very effective for us, it was quite evident when he was out we didn’t really have a player who can make the impact. Dom can in the final third and just with his general play. I think he will be a good fit for us.”

Tottenham started the previous campaign on fire, going unbeaten in their first ten games. However, they failed to sustain the momentum and missed out on a return to the Champions League. Meanwhile, the Whites got a place in the Europa League as compensation.

Postecoglou spoke about Tottenham’s lack of trophies about four months ago, and with the new campaign almost here, you expect him to back his fierce words with the right performance.

“I suppose in these last 15 years, there have been years where Tottenham have had bragging rights,” Postecoglou said regarding Spurs’ last trophy in 2008.

“Walk through the halls, mate, there’s no bragging rights there. There’s none. The pictures on the wall do not show players with a big sign saying ‘We’ve got bragging rights’. They’ve just got pictures of Bill Nicholson and people who have actually achieved.

“That’s where I want to get us. The funny thing is, if you win trophies, you tend to have bragging rights as well.

“Success to me is winning trophies and, until we do that, we have just got to make sure we stay laser-focused on what we want to achieve.”

Despite not playing in Europe last year, they could not make a significant mark in the Premier League. However, Postecoglou will be keen to build on the little achievements they attained last season.

In the transfer window, we have not seen the end for them yet until the window is closed at the end of the month.

Tottenham come into this 2024/25 campaign with one simple task – finish in one of the Champions League spots. Based on the business done in the market so far, the Whites have done the least deals compared to their counterparts in the run-in for the European slots.

Unless more additions are made, the drought might not end this season. Even in the Premier League, Tottenham are not a title contender, but a Champions League spot candidate. So if they achieve it, it will be considered an excellent feat.
