Early Life & Career
Adam Masina was born on January 2, 1994, in Khouribga, Morocco — not in Italy, despite his Moroccan-Italian upbringing.
His parents were Moroccan immigrants living and working in Bologna, and his mother was pregnant with him when the family traveled back to Morocco for a holiday visit. He was born at Hassan II Hospital in Khouribga during that trip.
Tragically, Masina lost his mother when he was just an infant. He moved back to Italy with his father and brother and settled in the Emilia-Romagna region.
His father struggled with alcoholism, which led Masina to be placed with several foster families over the years. He was eventually adopted by one of them — from whom he took the surname “Masina” — and grew up identifying as a Catholic Christian.
His football journey began in Bologna’s youth academy, where he developed as a left-sided defender.
In 2012, Bologna loaned him to Giacomense in the Lega Pro Seconda Divisione, where he made 11 appearances.
That season showed the club he was ready for bigger things. He also earned the Serie B Footballer of the Year award in 2015 — a major individual recognition early in his senior career.
Professional Career
Masina made his senior debut for Bologna on October 12, 2014, in a 2–1 victory over Latina. He became a key figure at the club across five seasons in Serie A, totaling 131 appearances and 4 goals for the Rossoblu.
In July 2018, Masina made his biggest career move to date, signing for English Premier League club Watford on a five-year contract.
He went on to rack up 90 appearances for the Hornets across the Premier League and Championship, earning a place in the EFL Championship Team of the Season in 2020–21 and a PFA Team of the Year nomination.
Watford also reached the FA Cup Final in 2018–19, where they finished as runners-up.
After leaving Watford in 2022, Masina joined Udinese on a three-year deal. He made 18 appearances there before moving on loan to Torino in February 2024.
Torino activated their buy option that June, signing him to a two-year contract starting July 2024.
According to Transfermarkt, his career total stands at 301 appearances and 10 goals across all club competitions.
On the international stage, Masina represented Morocco starting in March 2021 and went on to win the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations with the Atlas Lions — arguably the biggest honor of his career.
In February 2026, Torino terminated his contract by mutual consent, leaving him as a free agent.
