Early Life and Tennis Journey
Ajla Tomljanovic was born on May 7, 1993, in Zagreb, Croatia. Her father Ratko played professional handball and won the European Cup twice, in 1992 and 1993, while her mother Emina came from a Bosniak family.
Her older sister Hana also played competitive tennis, later representing the University of Virginia. Ajla picked up a racquet at age six, and by 13 she had moved to Florida to train at a higher level.
She played her first professional ITF Circuit event in Mexico City in 2008 and turned fully professional in December 2009. As a junior, she reached a combined world No. 4 ranking and won the 2009 Australian Open girls’ doubles title alongside Christina McHale.
In 2014, Tomljanovic switched national allegiance from Croatia to Australia after gaining permanent residency, first representing her adopted country at that year’s US Open.
She became a full Australian citizen in January 2018, clearing her to compete for Australia at every event, including the Fed Cup.
Professional Tennis Career
Tomljanovic’s breakthrough came at the 2014 French Open, where she upset former champion Francesca Schiavone and third seed Agnieszka Radwanska to reach her first Grand Slam fourth round.
A shoulder injury then forced surgery in 2016, wiping out almost the entire season.
She rebuilt steadily, reaching back-to-back tour finals in 2018 at Rabat and Seoul. By 2021, she had reached her first major quarterfinal at Wimbledon, repeating that result in 2022 before adding a US Open quarterfinal the same year.
That 2022 US Open run included the biggest match of her career: a three-set win over Serena Williams in what became the American star’s final professional match. Tomljanovic reached a career-high ranking of world No. 32 in April 2023, even while sidelined by a knee injury.
Knee surgery and a later procedure for uterine fibroids slowed her through 2023 and 2024, but she still won two WTA 125 titles, in Florianopolis and Hong Kong.
She reached the semifinals in Austin and Rabat during 2025, and continues to compete on tour in 2026, including a first-round appearance at Wimbledon.
Coach
Tomljanovic currently works with Alessandro Bega, a former Italian professional player who moved into coaching after retiring from the tour.
Earlier in her career, she was coached by David Taylor, a former Australian Fed Cup captain, along with Fernando Martinez and Rene Gomez during her junior and early professional years.
