Bryan Jafet Ruiz González was born on 18 August 1985, in San Jose, Costa Rica. The attacking midfielder made his senior debut for Alajuelense in 2003.

He played 86 games and scored 24 goals for the club from 2003-2006. Bryan joined the Belgian club Gent in 2006 and played for three seasons.

The Costa Rican attacker moved to the Eredivisie side Twente in 2009. He won the Eredivisie 2009-10 and the KNVB Cup in 2010-11 with the club. He was awarded the Johan Cruyff Shield in 2010 and 2011 for his brilliant performance. Ruiz played 65 games and scored 35 goals for Twente before his move to Fulham in 2011.
