Edson Omar Velázquez, a Mexican professional football player who plays defensive midfielder or center back for Eredivisie club Ajax and the Mexico national team, was born on October 24, 1997.

His Ajax team’s jersey number is #4. He participated in 86 games while playing for the team América (2016–2019) over the course of three seasons, scoring five goals.

He joined the Dutch team AFC Ajax, where as of this writing he has played in 79 games and scored seven goals.

Early Life

Lvarez was born to Adriana Velázquez and Evaristo Lvarez in the town of Tlalnepantla de Baz, which is located close to Mexico City. He attributes his earliest exposure to football to his work as a young child making football shirts for neighborhood teams. 

At the age of 14, Alvarez tried out for the Pachuca youth squad, but owing to his diminutive stature, he was not selected.

Despite his parents’ objections, who thought he had the skills to pursue his dream of becoming a professional football player, Alvarez decided to try out for Club América’s young team and ultimately made the team after a three-month tryout.

Career 

Lvarez joined Club América’s youth program in 2014 at the age of 16, participating in the under-17 squad.

The next year, Alvarez was promoted to América’s second-division team while still competing for the under-17 team.

AFC Ajax of the Netherlands stated on July 19 that it has reached a deal with Club America to sign Lvarez to a five-year contract, subject to a medical exam, for a reported US$17 million. 

On July 22, after passing his medical exam, he was formally presented and given the shirt with the number 4. On October 27, 2021, it was revealed that Alvarez has extended his contract with Ajax, keeping him with the team through 2025.

He was admitted into the club’s Club Van 100 on April 30, 2022.
