Hjulmand managed numerous clubs in his career. He coached the Danish club Lyngby from 2006-2008 and led the team to win the Danish 1st Division in the 2006-07 season.
From 2008-2011, Hjulmand was the assistant manager of the Danish Superliga side Nordsjælland under Morten Wieghorst. He replaced Morten in 2011 as the head coach.
He led the club to win their first Danish Superliga title in his very first at the helm, in the 2011-12 season.
In 2014, Kasper Hjulmand joined the German Bundesliga side Mainz 05 as Thomas Tuchel’s successor.
In the 2014-15 season, Mainz 05 was knocked out of the DFP Cup’s first round under him. He led the team to be unbeaten in their first 8 games in the Bundesliga, and after that, only one win in 13 games. He was sacked on 17 February 2015.
The Dane returned to Nordsjælland and managed the team for two seasons and a half. Nordsjælland finished sixth and third in the Danish Superliga under Hjulmand in the last two seasons before his departure in 2019.
