He was born in Genk and played over 200 Bundesliga games during the majority of his professional career with 1899 Hoffenheim, Werder Bremen (on loan), and VfL Wolfsburg in Germany.

Casteels was a teammate of fellow goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois at K.R.C. Genk, where he was developed. He was initially thought to be superior to Courtois, but Courtois gained entry into the team while he and several of the club’s other goalkeepers were injured.

Casteels left TSG 1899 Hoffenheim for VfL Wolfsburg in January 2015, however, the first half of the three-and-a-half-year deal was spent on loan at Werder Bremen.

In the 2015 DFL-Supercup, he represented Wolfsburg, stopping Xabi Alonso in the penalty shootout to help his team win following a 1-1 tie.
