About Leigh Wood

Leigh Wood is an English boxer who competes in the featherweight division. Born in Gedling, Nottinghamshire, England, on 1 August 1988, he began boxing at the age of nine. As an amateur boxer, he won several national titles and represented England internationally. He turned professional in 2011 and won 26 of his 29 fights, including 16 knockouts.

Early Life

Wood came from a family of fighters, with his father and uncle both being boxers. After watching his father fight Carl Froch, a world champion from Nottingham, he was inspired to take up the sport. Wood attended Carlton le Willows Academy and then Nottingham Trent University, where he studied sports science. He would often train before and after classes with his studies.

Wood made his professional boxing debut in September 2011, knocking out Delroy Spencer in the first round. He won his first nine fights before losing to Gavin McDonnell in February 2014. After that loss, Wood fought eight consecutive featherweight bouts, including a British title eliminator against Josh Wale and a Midlands Area title fight against Lee Glover.

Wood won the Commonwealth featherweight title in March by knocking out Abraham Osei Bonsu in the second round. He then defended the title against Ryan Doyle in May 2019. Wood entered The Golden Contract Featherweight Tournament and won, but lost to Jazza Dickens in the semifinals.

He also defeated Reece Mould in the ninth round in February 2021 to win the vacant British featherweight title. When he challenged WBA featherweight champion Xu Can in July 2021, he knocked him out in the 12th round to win an upset. In his debut with Matchroom Boxing, a leading promotional company, he became the first boxer to win a world title.

Wood’s first defense of his WBA title was a rematch against Mauricio Lara in February 2023, following their controversial first fight in August 2021. Wood won the rematch, but Lara was stripped of the title after failing to make weight. In the ninth round of their second fight, Lara knocked out Wood, who suffered his third career defeat.
