During Operation Storm in 1995, his family and other Serb citizens of Croatia fled the country during the Croatian War of Independence and settled in Belgrade, the capital of the former Yugoslavia and Serbia.

Degenek participated in sports for the Australian Institute of Sport and Westfields Sports High School. He joined the VfB Stuttgart under-19 team in the summer of 2012.
