Campbell Skate Park sponsored him, and in 1979, Steve took part in a national skate competition that took place in Escondido. He came in 5th place, and thereafter, Stacy Peralta contacted him to present his funding with Powell Peralta.
In 1980, Steve mastered skateboarding and proved it through the Gold Cup Series at the Oasis Skate park, which took place in Southern California. He invented a skateboarding trick called the Caballerial, popularly known as Full cab or 360 ollies. He is also credited for inventing the front sideboard slide.
Steve received street and vert titles at the World Championships held in Munster, Germany, in 1987. The same year, he set the one-time world record for maximum air achieved on a half-pipe of 11 feet. However, Danny Way broke his record in 1997. In 1999, Steve set one more record for the longest board slide on a 44-step rail.
Steve was also present in Stacy Peralta’s 2012 documentary film Bones Brigade, which is an autobiography regarding the life of Bones Brigade Skate Group participants!
