In a four-hole playoff, he beat 59-year-old Tom Watson by six strokes. Watson was going for his sixth Open win. Watson made a mistake on the 72nd hole, but Cink made a birdie, so they had to play again.

Following his big tournament win, Cink endured a rough patch for a few years. He did not win or come close to winning another tournament until 2020.

In September 2020, he won the Safeway Open, ending an 11-year slump. Then, in April 2021, he won again at the RBC Heritage, becoming the fourth player to win twice on the PGA Tour.
