Bjornsson started his athletic career with basketball. Thor joined the Division I club Breiðablik in 2004 as a center and moved to FSu in 2005. But he couldn’t go on playing basketball for long cause of the ankle injury and left his career in basketball.

In ’17 he was lost to Eddie Hall, who is his biggest rival. In 2018 Bjornsson finally won the World Strongest Man award.

The same year, Bjornsson broke the world record of Elephant Bar by lifting 472 kg (1,041 lb) in the third attempt and became the champion of the Arnold Strongman Classic. In 2019, he succeed to defend his title and became the first man to won Arnold Strongman Classic two times in a row.

Bjornsson started taking preparation for boxing from the beginning of 2020. He defeated Devon Larratt in a boxing match that took place at the CoreSports’ Fight Night 3. Bjornsson finished the bout in the first round.
